Ed and Louise Field, the new owners of Blackwood Construction Group, have diverse business backgrounds that prepared them well to become small business owners. Ed had a lengthy career in the automotive industry working for the Volkswagen group, while Louise worked extensively in the office and design industry. In addition, Louise had her own small business buying older homes, remodeling and selling them. The couple immigrated from South Africa to the United States in 2001, and purchased their first home in 2003. Due to Ed’s career in the automotive industry, they moved frequently across the country, buying and selling homes in the process. This piqued Ed and Louise’s interest in construction and remodeling, which they have done as a secondary business for the last two decades. Louise continued to work in the commercial office industry but eventually earned her Real Estate license and Class A contractor’s license which allowed her to buy and sell her properties.
After decades of working in the corporate world, Ed and Louise decided they were ready to own their own business and began to search for opportunities that aligned with their professional backgrounds. During their search, they were introduced to Patti Anderson, one of our experienced Business Development Officers. Patti provided Ed and Louise with different business and financial scenarios to help them decide which business to acquire. Ultimately, Ed and Louise chose Blackwood Construction Group because it had a great reputation in the market, the financials were sound, it provided plenty of autonomy, and gave them the ability to pursue additional business ventures in the future. However, they still needed financing for the acquisition. Patti was able to provide them with an SBA 7(a) loan that covered the acquisition costs and provided them with working capital to maintain cash flow in the business.
